What is a Systemic Family Constellation?
Healing Through the Field of Love

Systemic Family Constellation, discovered by the German Psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, is a transformational healing modality that uncovers hidden dynamics and generational entanglements within your family system or personal life. These unseen forces often shape your relationships, health, and life direction.  It allows us to see how love, pain, and patterns flow through generations, shaping the present.

At the heart of this work is the Morphogenetic or Knowing Field—a collective ancestral memory that allows unconscious patterns to surface and be witnessed. Through this sacred space, we are invited to bring what is unseen into the light, gently release what no longer serves, restore harmony, and create space for healing.

Constellations are typically held in a group or private setting, where representatives stand in for family members, emotions, illnesses, or other elements. Their presence reveals what needs to be seen, honored, and healed.

This work is not about blame. The purpose is to restore order, belonging, and the flow of love in the system, allowing healing at a deep soul level.

About Bert Hellinger

Bert Hellinger (1925–2019) was a German psychotherapist, teacher, and the founder of Systemic Family Constellations. Drawing from his early experiences as a Catholic priest, his time living among the Zulu people of South Africa, and his studies in psychoanalysis, group dynamics, and family therapy, Hellinger developed a groundbreaking way of seeing family systems.

He observed that unresolved traumas, exclusions, and imbalances in giving and receiving could echo across generations, influencing the lives of descendants in unseen ways. Through what he called the Knowing Field, Hellinger discovered that when these hidden entanglements are acknowledged with respect and love, the natural order of the family system can be restored, and healing can flow.  Today, Family Constellations are practiced worldwide, evolving through the contributions of many facilitators while staying rooted in Hellinger’s original principles of love, order, and belonging.

Who Can Benefit?

  • Anyone feeling stuck, disconnected, or caught in repetitive patterns

  • Those navigating grief, trauma, illness, relationship challenges, or generational wounds

  • Individuals on a spiritual or ancestral healing journey

  • Therapists, coaches, and healers drawn to explore the interconnected field of human relationships

Roles in a Family Constellation Session

1. Client (Seeker or Issue-Holder)

As the client, you bring a personal issue you'd like to explore

  • Arrive with an open heart and clear intention (less story, more presence)

  • Share a few key details about your family of origin

  • Be asked to select representatives to stand in for people or elements in your system

  • Participate directly or simply observe—sometimes this is the most powerful position

  • Remain curious and receptive to what unfolds. The field works beyond logic or the conscious mind.

  • Leave the session with a deeper understanding, and possibly a healing sentence or practice to continue integration

2. Representative

You stand in for a person, ancestor, or energetic element within the constellation.

You are invited to:

  • Not act or pretend, but allow your body to be guided by the field

  • Notice sensations, emotions, or movements that arise, even if they’re not your own

  • Be chosen by the facilitator or the client to represent someone or something

  • Show up with openness and presence—no prior experience is necessary

Serving as a representative can be deeply moving and healing, even if you're not the client

3. Witness (Observer)

You hold space without participating physically in the constellation.

As a witness, you:

  • Offer a sacred, nonjudgmental presence to the client and group

  • Feel deep resonance or personal insight by simply watching

  • Be moved by the field in subtle but profound ways

  • Respect the confidentiality of the process and refrain from giving advice

  • Can be deeply touched. The field moves us all, even in stillness.

  • As a witness, you may experience openings and shifts in your own entanglements (just as deeply as a client or a representative) because the Knowing Field works on everyone present

*Important Guidelines for All Participants*

  • Confidentiality is sacred—what happens in the circle stays in the circle

  • Stay open to the mystery of the process—not everything needs to be understood logically

  • No fixing, helping, or rescuing—we trust the field to show what wants to be seen

  • Be present, grounded, and respectful—this work invites the soul, not the ego
